Benefits of Proper Rug Padding
- Extended Rug Life: Padding absorbs foot traffic impact, reducing wear on rug fibers
- Floor Protection: Prevents dye transfer and scratching on hardwood and tile
- Safety: Keeps rugs from slipping and bunching, preventing trip hazards
- Comfort: Adds cushioning underfoot, reducing fatigue
- Sound Dampening: Absorbs noise in multi-story homes
Types of Rug Padding
Felt Padding
Best for high-traffic areas and heavy rugs. Provides excellent cushioning and durability. Typically made from recycled fibers.
Rubber Padding
Ideal for rugs on hard floors. Offers superior grip and is moisture-resistant. Look for natural rubber rather than synthetic.
Felt/Rubber Combination
The gold standard for most applications. Combines the cushioning of felt with the grip of rubber. Our most recommended option.
Memory Foam
Maximum comfort but less durable. Best for low-traffic areas where luxury feel is the priority.
Sizing Your Pad
Padding should be 1-2 inches smaller than your rug on all sides. This keeps the pad invisible while providing full support. Never use padding that's larger than your rug.
When to Replace
Most pads last 5-7 years. Replace when you notice the rug sliding, flattened padding, or visible deterioration. Old padding loses its grip and cushioning effectiveness.
