How We Clean Your Rug

Discover our proven 6-step cleaning process, perfected over 32 years. Every Oriental rug we clean receives the same meticulous care and attention to detail.

Why We Clean Rugs at Our Facility

Rugs cleaned on-location are rarely dusted or rinsed thoroughly. This leaves soil and chemical residue in the fibers, which can damage dyes over time. Our facility allows for complete immersion washing, thorough rinsing, and controlled drying—resulting in a deeper, safer clean that extends your rug's life. 1

Inspection

Once your rug arrives at our facility, we perform a comprehensive inspection of the face, back, sides, and fringe. We identify fiber types, construction methods, existing damage, and any problem areas that need special attention. This helps us determine the safest and most effective cleaning approach for your specific rug.

Dust Removal

Your rug is vacuumed on both sides and put through our specialized dusting machine. This exclusive process gently shakes out the sand, soil, and loose matter that accumulates deep within rug fibers over years of use. Proper dusting is essential—without it, soil turns into 'mud' when wet and damages the foundation.

Washing

After dusting, the washing process begins. We use pH-balanced, biodegradable cleaning solutions appropriate for your rug's fiber type. Both the back and front are carefully washed by hand or with gentle equipment. This process removes odors, residues, and stains while preserving the rug's colors and structure.

Centrifuge Pre-Dry

After washing, we use an exclusive centrifuge process to extract excess water from your rug. This spinning extraction removes water quickly and evenly without damaging fibers, significantly reducing drying time and preventing color bleeding or mildew development.

Controlled Drying

Your rug is hung in our special drying room with controlled temperature and humidity. This environment allows rugs to dry evenly over 6-12 hours, preventing shrinkage, color migration, and mold growth. Unlike quick-dry methods, controlled drying preserves your rug's integrity.

Final Inspection

After drying is complete, your rug is re-vacuumed and fringes are carefully brushed and groomed. We perform a final inspection to ensure no spots were missed during washing. The rug is then rolled, wrapped, and prepared for delivery back to you—fresh, clean, and beautiful.

Cleaning Process FAQ

Common questions about our professional rug cleaning process, methods, and what to expect.

Why should rugs be cleaned at a facility instead of in my home?

In-home rug cleaning has several serious limitations. Portable equipment cannot achieve the water pressure or extraction power of facility-based systems, which means rugs cleaned on-location are often left with soap residue and trapped moisture in the foundation.

Our off-site facility allows for:

  • Complete immersion washing – the entire rug is submerged and flushed, something impossible to do on your living room floor
  • Thorough rinsing – we use hundreds of gallons of water to flush out all soap and soil, with no risk to your floors or furniture
  • Climate-controlled drying – rugs dry evenly over 6–12 hours, preventing mold, shrinkage, and color bleeding
  • Proper dusting – our dusting equipment removes pounds of embedded soil that home vacuums simply can't reach

The IICRC recognizes off-site cleaning as the gold standard for Oriental rug care.

What cleaning solutions do you use on Oriental rugs?

We use pH-balanced, biodegradable cleaning solutions that are specifically formulated for natural fibers. Different rug materials require different approaches:

  • Wool rugs – mild, slightly acidic solutions that preserve lanolin and fiber strength
  • Silk rugs – pH-neutral, silk-safe formulations that protect the delicate luster
  • Cotton-foundation rugs – solutions designed to prevent browning and cellulose damage

All our products are 100% non-toxic and eco-friendly—safe for children, pets, and the environment. We never use harsh chemicals, bleach, or optical brighteners that can damage natural dyes.

For rugs with pet issues, we add specialized enzyme treatments that break down urine compounds without affecting the rug's dyes or fibers.

How long does the entire cleaning process take from pickup to delivery?

The typical turnaround is 5 to 7 business days from the time we pick up your rug. This allows adequate time for each of our 6 steps:

  • Day 1: Inspection and dust removal
  • Day 2–3: Washing with appropriate solutions
  • Day 3–4: Centrifuge extraction and controlled drying (6–12 hours)
  • Day 5–7: Final inspection, grooming, and scheduling delivery

Rugs with heavy soiling, pet contamination, or those requiring additional treatments like stain protection may take an extra day or two.

If you have a time-sensitive need, let us know when you schedule your cleaning and we'll do our best to accommodate your timeline.

Is your cleaning process safe for antique and delicate rugs?

Absolutely. With 32+ years of experience, we've safely cleaned thousands of antique, heirloom, and museum-quality rugs. Every rug begins with a detailed inspection where we assess fiber type, dye stability, structural condition, and any existing damage.

Based on this inspection, we customize every aspect of the cleaning process—water temperature, solution strength, agitation level, and drying method—to match the rug's specific needs. Fragile antique rugs receive extra-gentle handling throughout.

In fact, regular professional cleaning actually helps preserve antique rugs by removing the abrasive dirt and grit that slowly destroys fibers from the inside out. If your antique rug has existing damage, our repair specialists can address that before or after cleaning.

Can professional cleaning remove all stains from my rug?

We can remove the vast majority of stains, including food, beverages, dirt, pet accidents, and general soiling. However, we believe in being honest: some stains may be permanent, particularly those that have:

  • Chemically altered the dye (bleach, strong acids, certain medications)
  • Been set by heat (iron burns, hot liquid damage)
  • Been treated with harsh DIY chemicals that caused color loss
  • Penetrated deep into old, weakened fibers over many years

During our initial inspection, we'll identify any stains that may be difficult or impossible to fully remove and set realistic expectations. For stains caused by dye loss, our color restoration service may be able to help.

To prevent future stains, we recommend applying ScotchGuard protection after cleaning.

Why is dust removal so important before washing a rug?

Dust removal is arguably the most critical step in rug cleaning and the one most often skipped by less thorough cleaning services. An average-sized rug can hold several pounds of embedded sand, soil, and fine particulates that regular vacuuming cannot reach.

If you wash a rug without proper dusting first, all that trapped soil turns into mud that settles deep into the rug's foundation. This muddy residue damages the warp and weft threads, causes premature fiber breakdown, and creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

Our specialized dusting machine gently vibrates and agitates the rug to shake out embedded particles from both sides. This single step alone can dramatically improve the results of the subsequent washing process and extend your rug's lifespan significantly.
